On September 18, 1997, Oprah invited viewers of her show to join her in using their lives to improve the lives of others, her response to the tragic death of Princess Diana and Mother Teresa, establishing Oprah’s Angel Network. She continues to encourage people around the world to make a difference in the lives of others.
Her vision is to inspire others to create opportunities for under-served women and children. Viewers have donated more that $70 million dollars to the Angel Network. At the same time, Oprah asked for donations she also made a plea for people to donate their time by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. 15,000 people became involved and 200 new homes were built. After the destruction of part of our country by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Oprah’s Angel Network provided contributions to organizations that stepped in nd made a difference. $15 million dollars donated to Oprah’s Angel Network provided the opportunity to build almost 300 houses in the area.
Grants are awarded in four program areas including women, children and families, education and literacy, relief and recovery as well as youth and community development. The grants are awarded to organizations that operate projects in under-served communities providing educational as well as assisting in providing basic needs. To date, contributions have built 60 schools for children in 13 countries, bought books for children in 27 countries in different languages and provided uniforms for children in South Africa where children are not permitted to attend school without a uniform.
