Oprah's Angel Network

Oprah’s Angel Network is a charity founded in 1997 after a show she did where she asked her viewers to donate money towards scholarships for the Boys and Girls Club of America along with donating their time to build homes for the needy with the Habitat for Humanity International. The outpouring of good will and donations that came out of this was more than she could have hoped for. From this show alone she raised 3.5 million dollars for the scholarship fund.

Oprah’s goal behind this first fundraising drive was to show people that one person can make a difference, and the initial concept came from a guest she had on one of her shows back in 1994. Nora came onto her show and explained how she and her friends started the charitable organization Penny Harvest. By collecting just pennies they were able to collect $1000.00 to donate towards charitable causes.

Since its inception, Oprah’s Angel Network has done some really amazing things to help better people’s lives and living conditions. She's not only donating her money and time, but she's teaching them to better themselves so that their standards of living can be improved. One such project is the Leadership Academy for Girls that she founded in South Africa.

Oprah’s Angel Network has also been responsible for building more than fifty-five schools in twelve different countries. Her organization has also donated uniforms and school supplies to 18,000 poor children all over Africa. One of the requirements to attending school in Africa is the wearing of a uniform to school each day, and many underprivileged kids can’t afford this luxury. Oprah’s Angel Network is opening up new opportunities to these children that they would not otherwise have.
