Not many people in the world today have an influence over the public like Oprah Winfrey does. In May of 2000, she expanded her realm of influence from television to the print media with The Oprah Magazine. It is a bi-monthly magazine that won an award in its very first year of publication. More recently, it earned an award for General Excellence in Leisure Interests from the National Magazine Awards in 2007. The accolades Oprah and the magazine receive can be partially attributed to her expectation and demand for the highest standards of journalism.
The people who contribute to her magazine meet the highest of standards. She enlisted Phil McGraw for psychology contributions and Suze Orman for finance advice. Dr. David Katz teaches us how to eat right and Sex and the City creator Cindy Chupak contributes an article about maintaining a healthy love life. Oprah leaves no stone unturned when she finds just the right person to head each division. Being a great delegator is high up on her list of success traits.
Starting with The Oprah Magazine’s “Here We Go” to “What We Know for Sure”, Oprah’s instinct for what people want and need is in high gear. The magazine started off reaching 1.6 million of her fans. Keeping the bulk of the magazine geared to an affluent upper middle class audience has proven to be a wise decision. Many feel that her “Live Your Best Life” section and its life lessons speak to everyone, where ever they are in life.
It is said that if an entrepreneur is able to get his or her product or service featured in The Oprah Magazine, their chances for success have just escalated beyond comparison. One entrepreneur experienced a 60% rise in sales within 30 days of an appearance in the publication.
