Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her parents were very young and were not married; they broke up awhile after she was born. Her mother’s name was Vernita Lee, and she worked as a housemaid, and her father’s name was Vernon Winfrey who worked as coal miner to try to support Oprah at the time. Later in life, her father became a city councilman. After Winfrey was born, she lived with her grandmother in a rural environment. Her grandmother Hattie Mae Lee was very poor and Oprah was always made fun of since her grandmother couldn’t afford clothing for her. She often wore dresses made of potato sacks to school.
Despite her poverty and kids making fun of her, Oprah learned how to read at the age of three and was taken to the local churches to recite the Bible. Her grandmother taught her so well that when she went to the churches they gave Oprah a nickname “The Preacher.” Her grandmother also taught her good manners and to always do her chores, because if she didn’t, she would be hit with a switch.
After all that Winfrey went through during her young life, she became a millionaire at the age of 32 by hosting her talk show “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. Her show went national and everyone loved watching it. In the early 1990’s, Oprah was considered the richest women in entertainment. She was ranking in a nine figure salary very early in her career. Her talk show inspired many young African American females, because they looked at what Oprah came from and what she is now. She is an inspiration to many people and her career has taken her to the top.
